Overview:
The California Invasive Plant Council (Cal‐IPC) is a nonprofit organization working to protect
California’s wildlands from invasive plants through research, restoration, and education. We
serve a statewide membership of 1,000 land managers, researchers, students, and concerned
citizens. Along with an annual conference and field courses throughout the year, we maintain
programs focused on the science and policy of addressing invasive plants. We are in an exciting
period of growth—in 2010, we expect to add three new staff members to our existing staff of

Position Purpose:
Oversee statewide invasive plant mapping effort. Includes working with staff and contractors to
collect data in partnership with local land managers, integrate into GIS, and develop an
interactive online data system. Some travel required for meetings, conferences, and field work.
Duties:
Primary Program:
- Collect data on invasive plant distribution from local resource managers statewide, and
supervise one or more assistants who travel extensively to collect data
- Guide contractors in the design and construction of an online mapping system that
provides distribution data and tools to support land management decisions
- Integrate habitat suitability modeling to strengthen predictive capacity
- Communicate with program steering committee, guide collaborative strategic planning
- Track timelines and budgets, file progress reports, meet project deadlines
General Mapping:
- Generate maps and data results for posters, reports, and presentations
- Design and compile a database of base maps for Cal‐IPC mapping work
- Prepare metadata and other documentation for current and legacy data
- Administer, maintain, and troubleshoot GIS hardware, software, and data; research and
recommend new purchases as needed
- Develop protocols for long‐term GIS data collection at Cal‐IPC
- Provide GIS support to staff, project team, collaborators, and organized trainings
- Assist the Training Program Manager in the development of weed mapping curriculum
- Identify synergistic opportunities for collaboration, foresee new applications for Cal‐
IPC’s geospatial products, provide leadership in developing long‐term strategies to take
advantage of evolving spatial technologies
- Assist Executive Director in preparing materials for mapping‐related grant proposals
Qualifications:
This position requires initiative and creativity to develop a new program with significant
deliverables within the next two years, while also working collaboratively to maintain a
collective vision with our diverse steering committee. Applicants must have three years
experience in conservation GIS, with:
- Proficiency in ArcGIS and relational databases, including conversion, analysis,
management and graphical representation of spatial data sets derived from
cartographic and tabular source material, as well as experience automating data
processing tasks and using geoprocessing tools for spatial analysis
- Background in natural resource applications of conservation GIS, with knowledge of
California geography, ecosystems, botany, and natural resource organizations
- Familiarity with GPS data collection for natural resources applications
- Ability to interact well with diverse natural resource managers throughout the state
who will be the chief source of data
- Attention to detail, highly organized, friendly professional manner
- Strong communication and writing skills
- Flexibility to take on diverse assignments as needed
Additional desired qualifications include: experience in geospatial programming for online
applications including ArcGIS Server, Google Maps API development, SQL database, JavaScript,
Drupal; knowledge of data standards for invasive plant mapping.

AFOLU Carbon Development and Project Finance Specialist

Responsibilities
- Develop project leads, scope of work and proposals for AFOLU carbon development work to be provided by Terra
- Assess carbon feasibility of AFOLU projects versus various market standards including: VCS, CCB, CAR., CDM and others
- Manage carbon development process for AFOLU projects and provide all non-carbon measurement work against contract deliverables including:
- Develop and manage collaborative work plans with partners
- Provide project design reviews, financial projection development, land tenure assessment, carbon agreement development, management of validation process
- Interact with internal team for carbon measurement and modeling components of deliverables
- Draft components of PDs and manage validation process
- Develop and refine processes to manage and automate carbon development process
- Support writing grant proposals and RFPs
- Interact with project finance team on developing finance strategies, structures and carbon transaction
- Provide due diligence support on investment projects
- Perform field visits in developing countries for project and partner assessment and gather data for carbon development
Required Qualifications
- Experience in the project design and implementation of community based AFOLU projects
- In-depth knowledge of all AFOLU market standards, guidelines and protocols
- Direct experience in carbon development work for AFOLU projects
- Working knowledge of AFOLU methodologies
- Ability to develop financial models for projects
- Understanding of transactional and investment structures that are/can be used for project finance
- Developing country field level development work
- Experience working in an international environment with global stakeholders

The Geospatial Innovation Facility (GIF – http://gif.berkeley.edu) at UC Berkeley is seeking a full-time Computer Resource Specialist (CRS II), who has experience in both IT/server support and geospatial programming including ArcGIS Server and Google Maps API development.
The GIF supports research and outreach activities of users interested in geospatial analysis utilizing GIS, GPS, spatial analysis, remote sensing, 3D visualization, and webGIS. We serve the geospatial needs of UC students, faculty, and staff. In addition, the GIF reaches out to K-12 youth groups and the general public.
The GIF Geospatial IT specialist will gain and share experience in the newest geospatial software and technology available on the market today, including state-of-the-art techniques (e.g. object-based image analysis and remote sensing) and software (e.g. open-source GIS and webGIS applications) used in natural resource and social science research.
Responsibilities
- Technical management of hardware and software
- Develop, maintain, and troubleshoot GIS and Remote Sensing hardware and software.
- Maintain proprietary software licensing.
- Manage and maintain multi-user CNR computing classroom environment, including class software for a broad instructional portfolio.
- Maintain servers and network configurations, user accounts, and email lists.
- Provide technical support and training to users
- Discuss support needs with users and supervisors.
- Help work out solutions to technical problems.
- Train users with effective use of new equipment and programs.
- Provide assistance to users via walk-in, telephone, and email.
- Print large format maps and posters.
- Support and develop web GIS sites using google maps API, and ArcGIS server technology
- Maintain existing Google Maps and ArcGIS Server webGIS sites.
- Develop new webGIS sites in support of client specifications.
Required Qualifications
We are seeking someone who has 3-5 years experience with IT systems maintenance, but also has experience in one or more geospatial technologies. The ideal candidate will have:
- Experience managing a multi-user networked XP workstation environment.
- Experience installing, maintaining, and upgrading software, including OS imaging.
- Experience with ESRI GIS software and applications, including ArcGIS Desktop and ArcGIS Server.
- Experience developing spatial databases with PostgreSQL/PostGIS or MySQL.
- Experience in web programming with JavaScript, PHP, or Python.
- Experience with remote sensing software (e.g. Erdas Imagine, eCognition, ENVI) and GPS units (e.g. Garmin and Trimble) a plus.
- Experience maintaining Linux servers a plus.
- Experience deploying novel solutions in networked environment.

VertNet Project Coordinator (Staff Research Assoc II)

VertNet is a new multi-institution, collaborative project that will combine the online accessibility of four distributed data networks for vertebrates: ORNIS (http://ornisnet.org), HerpNET (http:// herpnet.org), MaNIS (http:// manisnet.org/) and FishNet (www.fishnet2.net/). Together, these taxon-based web portals now serve georeferenced data on vertebrates from approximately 90 museums, 48 of which are participating in multiple portals. The majority of these institutions are in the United States, but their collections are global in scope. These data portals make museum specimen data available freely to the public and researchers, and serve information such as museum catalog number, locality information, georeferenced coordinates, and other specimen related data. The goal of these portals is to facilitate studies in conservation, ecology, and evolution. We are seeking a person to fill the position of VertNet Project Coordinator. This person will oversee integration of ORNIS, HerpNET, MaNIS, and FishNet, research in biodiversity information, and will pursue integration with other biodiversity information sites such as Encyclopedia of Life (EOL) and AmphibiaWeb, and will promote research and outreach in the field of biodiversity informatics. They must have a background in biodiversity informatics and be aware of various research (GIS, evolutionary biology, systematics) that takes advantage of these data.

Pay Scale: $43,500 salary plus benefits
Background The San Francisco Botanical Garden is a 55 acre Botanical Garden located in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco. The garden operates under a unique public-private partnership between the City of San Francisco Park and Recreation Department and the non-profit San Francisco Botanical Garden Society. The gardens have over 23,000 accessions comprised of more than 7,500 species. The collections are strongest in plants originating from Mediterranean, Montane Tropic Cloud Forest, and Mild-Temperate climates, including a number of specialty themed gardens as well (Garden of Fragrance, Ancient Plant Garden, Succulents, etc)
This position is part of the Plant Collections Management Department which is responsible for the information tracking, interpretive labeling, acquisition and development of all plant collections at SFBG. This position will manage the introduction, data collection and development of GIS plant mapping via a special Institute of Museum and Library Sciences (IMLS) grant under direction of the Associate Curator.
Duties of Position
- Responsible for GIS (Geographic Information System) software set-up, management and all data processing.
- Able to manage and troubleshoot ArcGIS, server, and GPS equipment issues.
- Research, purchase or arrange for the lease/loan of current GPS equipment.
- Supervise and/or conduct all field data collection using GPS equipment, process all information to create GIS maps of at least 6 garden sections (Meso-American Cloud Forest, South Africa, Australia Collection, Ancient Plant Garden, Garden of Fragrance, Rhododendron)
- Work with city partners in the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department to import current polygon maps of SFBG and develop protocol for mutual sharing of data between the two entities.
- Utilize and provide feedback on a GIS ‘data model’ created by UC Davis for GIS data collection at botanical gardens.
- Manage a part-time GIS Assistant and any volunteers that are recruited to assist with the project.
- Develop protocols for long term GIS data collection at SFBG (beyond the project’s funded 1 year length)
- Work closely with Associate Curator and Plant Collections Management team to ensure the best collections practices are being followed by entire GIS team.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will have at least 3 years of experience as advanced GIS/GPS technician and specialist with demonstrated ability in the development, analysis, and application of ArcGIS databases. Advanced knowledge of and experience with GPS equipment, software, and management is essential. Knowledge and experience with plant records at botanical gardens, specifically FileMaker Pro, preferred. Knowledge and experience of the collections at the San Francisco Botanical Garden and/or horticultural background preferred but not required. Experience recruiting, training, and supervising volunteers in GPS/GIS and plant records work teams also preferred.OR
Combination of education and experience—course work, internships, previous employment, and volunteer activities relevant to proposed job duties will be evaluated.
Specific Skills
- Develop work plans and manage all project activities for GIS/GPS work and other grant-related activities.
- Develop PDA and Tablet PC methods for collecting and updating files in both computer database languages.
- Assist and/or consult with SFBG Plant Collections staff on technology needs and management.
- As required, work with Associate Curator and Volunteer Manager to recruit and train SFBG volunteers to assist with data collection tasks.

Nevada County, California is seeking an energetic GIS Analyst/Developer with programming, systems and data expertise to work with our team to develop and implement “world class” enterprise level/server based GIS solutions. The person in this position will be responsible for the design, development, testing, documentation and deployment of custom spatial analysis tools, applications, and GIS solutions on an ArcGIS Server/Windows platform. The purpose of this position is to create web applications that reduce dependency on desktop mapping applications thus reducing software maintenance cost, integrate GIS with legacy systems, implement web services and mash ups to create more robust and user friendly applications and create scripts to automate routine processes.
Work requires a high degree of teamwork, independent judgment and initiative. Strong ability to multi-task, organize and prioritize assignments effectively. The candidate must have the capability to learn quickly and apply knowledge to new technologies and environments. Ability to work harmoniously with project leads, technical staff, other departments, and contractors is a must. Ability to listen, understand, interpret and document customer requirements. Must be proficient at translating the business process into technical requirements, including defining how the applications interact with each other, with the databases, and with external vendors or objects to provide an integrated solution.
