University of California, Berkeley

In the Golden State, the University of California, Berkeley's (UC Berkeley) Geospatial Innovation Facility partnered with the Bay Area Automated Mapping Association to host a free conference event for local GIS users and anyone interested in learning more about GIS. Held at UC Berkeley's Mulfort Hall, the conference featured presentations and posters from students and professionals and provided an opportunity for discussion and networking for participants. In addition to the informative aspects of the conference, attendees had a chance to work through an exercise using GIS. The event was also supported by the Northern California Region of the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing. All the organizations involved are passionate about promoting GIS as a tool for solving real-world problems and enhancing research.

New Feature in The BAAMA Journal - Map Gallery

The BAAMA Journal is excited to announce a new Map Gallery feature in our Fall 2011 issue. We call on all amateur and professional cartographers to submit your favorite map for publication. We encourage everyone with a passion for mapmaking – students, GIS specialists, RS image analysts, senior managers, moonlighting executives – to contribute his or her map to The BAAMA Journal.

Map Gallery Submission Guidelines:

1) Maps must be authored by a Bay Area resident or feature a Bay Area location.

2) Maps may be larger than 8.5 x 11 inches but will most likely be scaled down. Outstanding maps may be published at approximately 11x17 inches.

3) Greyscale or color graphics are acceptable. File color must be CMYK.

4) Files can be submitted in the following formats: Native Adobe Application Files in PC format, High Resolution (recommended 300 dpi) .JPG, .TIF, .EPS, or .PDF.

5) Maps should be sent to editor@baama.org

SUBMISSION DEADLINES:

FALL 2011 ISSUE - OCTOBER 1, 2011

SPRING 2012 ISSUE - MARCH 1, 2012

We would like everyone in the BAAMA community and beyond to feel comfortable about contributing to this new feature in The Journal; as such, the submission guidelines are flexible. In future publications, we may alter Map Gallery submission guidelines to accommodate the changing needs of The BAAMA Journal.

Summary: This article describes how the San Francisco Department of Public Works used a very high-resolution digital elevation model to study urban storm water hydraulics. The base data came from a 1-meter horizontal resolution LiDAR aerial survey of San Francisco that was acquired in June 2007. The FBI ordered the survey prior to that year’s baseball All-Star game for use in security analysis, and provided the data to the city for free after the event.

Preparing Historical Aerial Imagery of Southern California Deserts for Use in LADWP’s GIS

Summary: This article describes a project in which 9,700 aerial images from 13 epochs ranging from 1929 to 1996 were catalogued, orthorectified and mosaicked for use by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP). Now Available: Educational Membership

BAAMA has just created a "Educational Membership". Here are the details:

1) The bundle administrator is in charge of administering the membership. This means that the bundle administrator must enter all of his/her students into the database. This is EASY to do, but the labor is with the bundle administrator (the person that pays the membership).

2) The student attending the BAAMA event MUST be on the membership list. This does not mean the student must register for the meeting. However the student MUST be entered into the database and part of the school's educational membership list. The folks running the registration desk will check the school's membership list. If the student is not on the list, they will need to pay the $10.00 charge to attend the meeting.

3) The student must show a current student ID at the registration desk the day of the educational meeting.

Active BAAMA members, we have imported all of the current user profiles into the membership management system of the new site. Please follow these instructions to log in, activate and renew your membership online.

1. At the bottom left corner of the home page, click "Forgot Password"

2. When prompted, enter the email address that you have supplied BAAMA when you originally registered.***

3. Your automatically generated password will be sent to your email. Once you have it, you may log in to the site.

4. Click "View Profile" in the same corner as the login menu. Here you can update your profile, contact information and email settings. You can also change your password.

5. To renew your membership online, click the "Renew Membership until 1 July 2011" button.

*** If the site is unable to identify your email address, there may have been a problem with our records. Please go to the "Become a Member" and follow the instructions to begin a new membership.

2010 BAAMA Education Award Winners Announced

The Fourth Annual BAAMA Educational Scholarship attracted applications from students across Bay Area colleges and universities. This year's winners submitted projects in a wide range of subject matters (public health service centers, access to sex education and web-based walking trails).

Susan Paulukonis, a graduate student at UC Berkeley School of Public Health, is our First Place prize winner for her poster “California's Metabolic Centers: Usage Patterns and Need by Newborn Screening Identified Clients, 2005-2009.” Susan utilized geocoding, spatial interpolation and network analysis to tackle the following problem: The California Genetic Disease Screening Program needed to understand who is using which metabolic referral centers, whether one or two more centers may be needed, and if so, where in the state they should be sited. This preliminary analysis determines center usage by clients, distance traveled, areas of unmet need and a preliminary look at diagnoses in the state. Susan plans to continue using GIS to explore the distribution of disease as well as access to services in California.

Deviyani Gurung, an undergraduate student at the University of California, Berkeley, was awarded the Second Place prize for her poster entry “Is Planned Parenthood Serving You?” Deviyani’s poster shows a series of maps in San Francisco, California. One map demonstrates proximity analyses between high schools and Planned Parenthood facilities. A second map presents optimal bicycle and bus routes. And, the third map suggests site locations for additional Planned Parenthood facilities. Overall, the poster reveals that many high school students are underserved by the current Planned Parenthood facility locations and offers a solution. Deviyani plans to pursue a career in city planning where she will use GIS to help allocate funds and resources to lower income areas.

Gary Lyons, a student at Diablo Valley College, is our Third Place prize winner for his web based Google Earth rendering of the Carquinez Strait, available at: http://terraordo.com/index.php/projects/maps_and_cartography/google_earth_overlay/. Four walking trails were mapped with GPS and the elevation profiles are shown for each trail. Gary plans to be a GIS professional with an emphasis in remote sensing and cartography.

First-, second-, and third-place prizes included awards of $1500, $1000, and $500, respectively. All three awards include Individual Membership in BAAMA for the 2010-11 fiscal year.

BAAMA is very excited about and proud of all those who entered the BAAMA Educational Scholarship competition. Congratulations to every student who is doing his/her part to use GIS and other geospatial technologies to improve and enhance the understanding and management of our Bay Area. Look out for the next scholarship in 2011!
